CMS Welcomes United Nations General Assembly Resolution regarding CMS Sharks MOU

By adopting the wide-ranging text on “Oceans and the Law of the Sea” on 11 December 2012 in New York, the United Nations General Assembly has for the first time ever officially recognized the importance of the CMS MOU on Sharks for the conservation of migratory sharks within a resolution to promote a healthy marine environment as part of achieving its sustainable development goals.

The December EU Fisheries Council concluded in the early hours of this morning, setting the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and Quotas for EU fishing vessels in 2013 – including those for sharks, skates and rays.

Die EU will Betrug beim Fang von Tiefseehaien verhindern. Grundsätzlich dürfen die empfindlichen Bestände von Europas Fischern nicht gefangen werden. Doch manche umgehen das Verbot, indem sie die gefangene Art umdeklarieren, in einen Lusitanischen Schlingerhai. Dieser steht nicht auf der Verbotsliste. Deshalb dürfte die EU diese Art bald schützen. Die EU-Fischereiminister beauftragten bei ihrem Treffen am Donnerstag in Brüssel die EU-Kommission, die nötige wissenschaftliche Expertise einzuholen, um den Lusitanischen Schlingerhai hinzuzufügen.
