Europaparlament stimmt endlich für strengeres Hai-Finning-Verbot

Lang umkämpfte Entscheidung war letzte wichtige Hürde in den Bemühungen um eine Schließung der EU-Schlupflöcher

Straßburg, Frankreich: Die Shark Alliance begrüßt das Votum des Europäischen Parlaments für eine Schließung der bestehenden Schlupflöcher im Finning-Verbot der Europäischen Union. Finning bezeichnet die Methode, bei der die Flossen eines Hais abgetrennt werden und der Körper auf See entsorgt wird. Nach jahrelangen Debatten haben 566 zu 47 Mitglieder des Europäischen Parlaments für einen Bericht gestimmt, der den Vorschlag der Europäischen Kommission billigt, die Ganzkörperanlandung sämtlicher Haie – d.h. ihre Anlandung im Hafen im natürlichen Zustand mitsamt den Flossen am Körper – verbindlich vorzuschreiben.

New Study Reveals Alarming Declines in Pacific Shark Populations

Research published today in the journal Conservation Biology presents the most comprehensive assessment of the status of Pacific shark populations to date.  The paper, authored by Dr. Shelley Clarke and a team from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community in New Caledonia, shows significant declines in catch rates for blue, mako, and oceanic whitetip sharks, as well as declining average sizes of oceanic whitetip and silky sharks, indicating heavy fishing.  These results, along with evidence of shark targeting reported by Dr. Clarke and other scientists in the western North Pacific, heighten concerns for the sustainability of Pacific shark populations.

Dozens of Nations Agree Global Shark Conservation Plan

Convention on Migratory Species facilitates new commitment to threatened species

An international, shark-focused meeting of more than 50 nations, convened under the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), concluded this week in Bonn with adoption of a global conservation plan for great white sharks, porbeagles, basking sharks, spiny dogfish, whale sharks, and two species of makos. The plan aims to complement and promote the objectives of the 2010 CMS Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the first intergovernmental treaty dedicated specifically to global shark conservation. To date, the MoU has 25 Signatories, including Germany, the United Kingdom, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Australia, Senegal, and the United States.
