IUCN Specialist Group issues Red List Assessments for North & Central American species

At the close of the annual meeting of leading American shark and ray scientists, the IUCN Shark Specialist Group (SSG) is releasing the first compilation of conservation status assessments for nearly 300 sharks, rays, and chimaeras (collectively known as chondrichthyan fishes) found in North American, Central American, and Caribbean waters conducted using the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species criteria.

Major fishing nation bans thresher landing and sale based on Indian Ocean Tuna agreement

Shark Advocates International is congratulating the government of Sri Lanka for adopting rules to protect three species of thresher sharks -- wide ranging species characterized by their exceptionally long tails – in line with a 2010 agreement by the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC).

CITES – letztes Treffen des Ständigen Ausschusses vor der Vertragsstaatenkonferenz

Diese Woche tagt der Ständige Ausschuss des „Übereinkommens über den internationalen Handel mit gefährdeten Arten freilebender Tiere und Pflanzen (CITES)“ zum 62. Mal in Genf. Der Ausschuss, der viele administrative und strategische Belange des größten internationalen Umwelt-Übereinkommens - auch Washingtoner Artenschutz-Übereinkommen genannt - regelt, ist die letzte große Zusammenkunft der Vertragsstaaten vor der Vertragsstaatenkonferenz im März 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand.
